In a science laboratory deep somewhere in one of the oceans, seas, and lakes on Earth, dressed in lab garments, the scientists, were non-humanoid forms, NHFs.

The laboratory was huge. There were NHFs at tables and desks; some walking about. Most were viewing television news of violent crimes all over the world; typing swiftly on silent keyboards as they watched, deleting, re-typing, back-tracking, and other processes unavoidable in hasty typing:-

"In the news, a man, 30 years old, raped a woman, 72 years old, after murdering her brother, 64 years old.

A man, 42 years old, raped and murdered his niece, 11 years old. He was jailed for life, but was paroled after he had served 10 years because his sister, mother of his victim, forgave him.

A couple, 22 and 26 years old, was arrested for abusing their six children.
After the children were removed from the custody of their abusive parents, the parents were freed on bail.

A cyclist, 29 years old, defiantly rides on the sidewalk and kills, by accident, a pedestrian, 79 years old. He rode off.

A Grandmother, 85 years old, who arranged the murder of a family member, was serving a life sentence. After serving 10 years of the sentence, she was paroled because she was going blind and was suffering from dementia.

A Father, 44 years old, murdered his daughter, 19 years old, in cold blood, in their yard by driving his car over her, twice. He was sentenced to twenty years in jail. He was paroled after serving eleven years.

A man, 36 years old, on his motorbike, knocked and killed a boy, 12 years old. The man was travelling above the legal speed limit. He was released on bail until the court trial.

A man, 25 years old, in his home, shot to death his parents, his sister, 26 years old, and his sister’s twins, 6 years old. He was jailed for life. He was paroled after serving twenty years.

A man, 24 years old, attacked and raped a woman in a church yard. He was jailed for nine years. He was paroled after serving five years.

A man, 44 years old, was drunk, driving with an expired licence, over the legal speed limit. He crashed into another car, killing the driver instantly, a woman, 54 years old, a Social Worker. He was granted bail, awaiting a court trial.

A hit-and-run driver, a man, 24 years old, mowed down a married couple crossing a road, while he was being chased by police. He was jailed for eight years, and paroled after serving five years.

A man, 23 years old, stabbed his father to death with a kitchen knife in their home. He was not tried for murder because he was diagnosed as mentally ill. He was sentenced to be detained indefinitely in a facility for mentally ill persons.

Two boys, 14 and 15 years old, murdered a boy, 14, by stabbing him with a sword hidden in a walking cane. They pretended to be his friend before attacking him. After they had murdered him, they left his body at the roadside, and stole his motorized scooter. They were tried for murder, and were found guilty of murder. Because they were underage, their sentence was begun at a minimum security prison.

A woman, twenty-eight years old, was charged with murdering a baby, one year old. She was sentenced to ten years in jail. She was paroled after serving six years.

A man, 47 years old, abducted and raped a Primary School girl in a remote banana plantation. He was tried in Court, found guilty, and sentenced to life imprisonment. He served twenty years and was paroled.

A man, 48 years old, was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder. He was paroled after serving twenty-one years in prison.

A man murdered his neighbour when she was home alone. Sentenced to life, he was paroled after forty-five years.

A man murdered a mother of four children. He was a fugitive for seven years before he was caught. Sentenced to life, he was paroled after twenty-four years.

A man, a teacher. For twenty-nine years he raped little boys. He served the whole twenty-five years to which he was sentenced. He was released.

A man, convicted of murder, was sentenced to life. He served thirty-one years before being paroled.

In other news,---------."
At one of the larger and more important-looking desks, two NHFs were seated at opposite sides, engaged in an obviously troubling discussion.

That’s it, then?” “We’ve known for years it was coming, but we’ve been hoping that something would happen that would alter the direction. Headquarters from beyond this Galaxy has finally given up hoping, and decided to accept the science indicators.”
How much more time have we been given?” “Not more than a year for us. Some of our smaller centres have been given permission to pack up and leave any time now. Reports are coming in that a few have jumped at the opportunity and have already abandoned this hopeless world.” “Good for them. Let us try for long before this year’s end.”

The laboratories were set up on Earth many, many thousands of years ago by highly advanced interstellar non-humanoid forms, when they discovered the beginnings of a sentience, among myriads others, akin to what theirs was at their beginnings millions of eons ago in another Galaxy. As theirs was, this was one of the countless different directions continually exploding into existence in the natural evolution of sentient matter throughout the Galaxies.

Up until the end of the nineteenth century, each year they found increasing numbers of persons on this world worthy of being transported, in their dying seconds, to their own NHF world in another Galaxy where the humanoids were steered into an advanced sentience capable of developing their own substance into immortal and continuous humanoid evolution.

On many worlds throughout the Galaxies where NHF exploration discovered biological life, humanoid and countless others, NHF science has attempted, and in some of those worlds, is attempting to guide the evolution of life into a direction towards everlasting evolution.

NHFs have long, long ago achieved an algorithm that revealed the mechanics of immortality. The NHFs know the direction of evolution that led to the building of the algorithm, was begun by a humanoid civilization on a far away galaxy long before the first appearance of NHFs. That humanoid civilization had not travelled beyond their own world within their galaxy before their evolution came to a violent end.

The present dedication of NHF science to humanoid development on any world in any galaxy is driven by the hope to eventually retore humanoid evolution to the height that brought about its invention of everlasting self-sustaining and self-advancing non-humanoid evolution.

Non-humanoid science, as incredibly advanced as it has become, has, nonetheless, met with only discouragingly small success on Earth, so far.

Each year far less than a dozen or so humanoids have been found to show enough potential to merit being translated and transported to the NHF home for advancement. Moreover, the NHF endeavors in their own galaxy, as well, has not been successful in developing even one humanoid into equality with non-humanoid immortality.

Evolution of sentience, humanoid and countless other, on Earth has not yet been found to have the capacity for self-renewal in perpetuity, on their own.

From the beginning of the twentieth century, the numbers of humanoids qualifying have been drastically plummeting. The humanoids on this world are self-destructing as they did in those other worlds the NHF had to eventually abandon.

Sad. Another humanoid evolution self-destructs.” “Uh-huh, and meaning, too, that one more attempt of ours fails.” “On the other hand, ----.” “What?”

Remember that strange element one of our laboratories uncovered deep inside a humanoid's biology?" "When? As far as I remember we exhausted human biology thousands of years ago." "We had. This new discovery was so minor and irrelevant, we completely ignored it at the time. Four thousand years ago, or so. It was rarely found in humanoid biology. But in the meantime it has grown on its own, until nowadays it is a major component that shows up no matter which aspect of humanoid biology we look into. And our calculations are indicating it is a part of humanoid biology nowadays in millions, if not billions, of humanoids."

"It's been given a designation?" "Yes. Two." "Two designations." "A precise acronym by our scientist, the first one who uncovered it; and a name by the human scientists who found our precise acronym too cumbersome."

"Our acronym?" "ARZAARZE." "Oh, that acronym. I'm on the side of the humans. What's their name for it?"

"Righteousness." "Righteousness? "Uh-huh." "Meaning?" "They say, 'life at its best, even to the extent of killing other life that impedes life being its best.'" "Humans came up with that?" "Without any help from us."

"Which means it will probably take them nowhere, like everything else they have come up with, without any help from us."
"Probably. Although, there's one human focusing so intently on this "Righteousness", she is acquiring extraordinary abilities through it. She's been evolving faster in the direction of our capacity for self-renewal in perpetuity." "All right, focus on her and help her all you can in the little time we have left on this failed world."

A few weeks before the end of the year, the NHFs, who had been on Earth for many, many thousands of years, abandoned Earth. Before they left, leaving no trace of their stay, they grafted into the genetics of that "Righteousness" human, a woman, their acronym, ARZAARZE, and the calculus to its algorithm.

"Good evening. Welcome to th six o'clock news.
