The
Rosetta Stone
was discovered in 1799 by French soldiers. This was during Napoleons
campaign. The Rosetta stone was discovered near the town of Rosetta (
now called Rashid ) in Egypt. Later, the the french named the stone
after the place it was found near. After Napoleans downfall, the
Rosetta stone was taken by British forces as part of a peace treaty
when the British defeated the French while at Egypt, in 1801. After
deciphering it, the Rosetta stone was placed in the British Museum,
now open to the public.
The
mentioned 3
scripts to be deciphered were Hieroglyphics, Demotic and Ancient
Greek. There were also 2 main people credited for deciphering the
mystery. The first was Thomas Young. Thomas Young was first to
suggest hieroglyphics represented sounds and not only pictures. The
second was Jean-Francoise Champollion. In my opinion he should be
most credited because, to decipher the stone, he mastered Ancient
Greek and Coptic (desendant of demotic ). He fully cracked the
hieroglyphic code by matching Greek names to hieroglyphics. The over
all time it took for it to be deciphered completely took decades.
After
the contents
of the stone were uncovered, the impact was great. This shift enabled
the translations of count less Egyptian texts, such as tombs, temples
and papyri. It also revealed details about many different things. It
although, did not uncover anything about new mythology but, because
of the deciphered hieroglyphics, sholars understood Egyptian
mythology better. Other thigs revealed by it was Religeon, Governance
and laws and daily life as an Egyptian.
To
this day, the Rosetta stone is still one of the most famous artifacts
in the world. Its a symbol of linguistic breakthroughs. This artifact
still sparks debate about cultural heritage. the
conclusion of
this article is that without the rosetta stone the secrets and
mysteries of Egypt would remain buried in the sand. It would have
never lead to our now understanding of Egyptian culture. If the
French had not found the Rosetta stone, we would be completely
clueless to the actual secrets and that is pretty scary.
